In Minecraft, one block in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld on the X and Z axes. This is why traveling through the Nether is the fastest way to cover long distances. How Nether Portal Coordinates Work

The Nether is scaled at a 1:8 ratio relative to the Overworld. When you step into a portal, Minecraft converts your X and Z coordinates and then searches for an existing portal near the destination. If it finds one within the search range, you arrive there. If not, a new portal is generated.

  • Overworld to Nether: divide X and Z by 8. Y stays the same.
  • Nether to Overworld: multiply X and Z by 8. Y stays the same.

Example: an Overworld portal at X 800, Y 64, Z 400 links to a Nether portal at X 100, Y 64, Z 50.

Why Correct Coordinates Matter

If you build portals at the wrong locations, they can link to the wrong partner or create extra unwanted portals. Placing both sides at the calculated coordinates gives you a clean one-to-one connection. This is especially useful for:

  • Fast travel networks between bases
  • Highway systems in the Nether
  • Avoiding portal “scrambling” when multiple portals are close together

How to Use the Nether Portal Calculator

  1. Choose the conversion direction: Overworld to Nether or Nether to Overworld.
  2. Enter your X, Y, and Z coordinates (press F3 in Java Edition to see them, or check the map/coordinates screen in Bedrock).

  4. Build your portal as close as possible to the calculated X and Z. Y can usually stay the same, but adjust if needed for safe placement.

Java vs Bedrock Portal Linking

The coordinate conversion (divide or multiply by 8) is the same in both editions. The main difference is the search radius when the game looks for an existing portal:

  • Java Edition: smaller search range in the Nether (16 blocks), which makes precise placement more important.
  • Bedrock Edition: larger search range in the Nether (128 blocks), so portals can more easily grab the wrong partner if they are not carefully spaced.

In both versions, building at the exact calculated coordinates is the most reliable way to get the link you want.

Tips for Reliable Portal Links

  • Always convert coordinates before building the second portal.
  • Keep portals that should not link far enough apart (especially on Bedrock).
  • Y is not scaled, but height still affects which portal is chosen when several are nearby.
  • For long-distance travel, build a Nether highway and place portals only at the calculated spots.
